Microsoft Fingerprint Reader compatibility project

Postby CodeBender » Thu Aug 09, 2012 9:10 pm

You thought that your precious Microsoft Fingerprint Reader became obsolete when you changed to a 64-bit Windows version? You thought wrong!

Here I present the fully working 64-bit Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 compatible solution! So it's time to dig your Fingerprint Reader from the bottom of your retired hardware box, blow off dust from it and connect it again to your PC.
What you need to do to enjoy your fingerprint reader device again is to install drivers and software that are fully 64-bit Windows compatible.

Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10:

If you have Windows 8, 8.1 or 10 you need to get the latest compatible fingerprint reader software. The newest software (6.2.1) and drivers are available here:
http://teknogods.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=58889#p58889

See this post for instructions on how to install on 64-bit version of Windows 8, 8.1 and 10:
http://teknogods.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=55560#p55560

The troubleshooting utility for the latest DigitalPersona's software (see above) can be found here:
http://teknogods.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=58904#p58904

To solve the problem of fingerprint reader initialization after a computer comes back from sleep mode, try this solution:
http://teknogods.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=62340#p62340

The newest software allows to use the fingerprint reader with Internet Explorer and Google Chrome. Mozilla Firefox is not and will not be supported!
You can download the fixed Chrome extension from this post (thanks, Darinwil!):
http://teknogods.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=80253#p80253
Installation instructions:
http://teknogods.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=82387#p82387

Windows XP, Vista:

Software:

1. Drivers for both 32 and 64-bit Windows versions: download
2. DigitalPersona Personal 4.10 software for 64-bit Windows: download
3. Patched DigitalPersona 4.10 software components: download
4. Installation instructions in DOC format: download

For 32-bit solution as well as for updated drivers please see the next posts.

Additional software and fixes:

1. The troubleshooter utility for version 4.10 of DigitalPersona software can be downloaded from this post: http://teknogods.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=56630#p56630
2. The fix for fingerprint reader devices with hardware ID PID_00CA can be downloaded from this post: http://teknogods.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=58801#p58801
3. For those who want to disable the reader after logon (so the light does not disturb them), here's a small utility: http://teknogods.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=59548#p59548

Known bugs:

1. The DigitalPersona's Firefox plugin does not work with Firefox v4 and above, you can use FingerFox plugin as a replacement
2. It seems that the DigitalPersona's software may not always work properly after a computer wakes up from sleep. Try this solution: http://teknogods.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=62340#p62340

Important notes:

1. If you are installing the solution on a computer that has another fingerprint reader, you need to disable that device in the Control Panel in order for Microsoft's device to work properly
2. If the fingerprint reader refuses to work after your computer resumes from sleep mode, you need to unplug and plug back the fingerprint reader device or to use the above mentioned solution
3. If the fingerprint reader used in a corporate environment (please make sure your admin knows about it!), you need to press CTRL+ALT+DEL at the domain logon screen to be able to logon using the registered fingerprint

As a part of the Microsoft Fingerprint Reader compatibility solution I am also providing drivers and software for the 32-bit Windows 7 version

Now you don't need to keep using the old and incompatible Digital Persona Password Manager 2.0.1 software any longer.

1. DigitalPersona Personal 4.10 software for 32-bit Windows: download
2. Patched DigitalPersona 4.10 software components: download
3. Drivers for both 32 and 64-bit Windows versions: download
4. Installation instructions in DOC format: download

FingerFox project is located here.

The instructions on how to get and patch the latest DigitalPersona software and how to get the drivers that support the whole range of Microsoft fingerprint devices can be found here:
http://teknogods.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=58889#p58889

Updated (2010) drivers for Microsoft Fingerprint Reader

1. Updated drivers for both 32 and 64-bit Windows versions: download
2. Driver update instructions in DOC format: download
3. Installation, patching and driver updating instructions in MHT format: download

If you have problems with these newer drivers, please roll back to the earlier ones (see the original post).

If you have a fingerprint reader device with hardware ID VID_045E&PID_00CA, see this post for the fix: http://teknogods.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=58801#p58801

The instructions on how to get and patch the latest DigitalPersona software and how to get the drivers that support the whole range of Microsoft fingerprint devices can be found here:

I too am having trouble. I installed as instructed (windows 7 x64), but using the first set of drivers, the dp software would not recognise the reader, although windows apparently did. When plugged in with this set, the reader would flash brightly once, and then dimly flash twice. After installing the updated drivers, when plugged in, the reader would flash red brightly, and then possibly flash very fast dimly (this may just be my imagination). With the new drivers, the dp software would recognise the device, but when I tried to register a finger, nothing would happen (it would tell me to press my finger on the scanner, but the scanner would not light up and nothing would happen in the dp software). With both sets of drivers, after being plugged in and flashing a bit, the reader would go dark, with only the ring around the reader lit up, and very dimly at that.

After trying some funky stuff in xp mode, including installing dp 2.0, I found some interesting behaviour. When the reader was connected to the computer normally, it would stay dark. However, when connected to the virtual machine, it would light up, and behave normally (like it used to when connected to a real xp machine, back in the day). However, it still did not actually work. Pressing a finger onto it makes it light up even more (like it used to), presumably scanning the finger, but nothing would happen in the xp virtual machine. When trying to register fingerprints, it would say that the reader was connected, but, as with win 7, nothing would change in the program when a finger was pressed on the reader (however, as i said before, unlike with windows 7, the reader would light up even more, whereas with 7 it just stays dark). When disconnected from the virtual machine (releasing it back to the windows 7 part), the reader would then go dark again, with only the outer ring lit up (very, very dimly).

Which flavor of Win7 do you have? Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate? I tested the solution on Ultimate and Professional and in all cases it worked just fine.

First please check that the drivers are correctly installed (no exclamation mark on reader device in Device Manager). Second, make sure you have proper rights to overwrite files in the DP's installation folder. Also make sure you overwrite files in the _correct_ folder as there are 2 DP's folders on 64-bit system.

The reader flashes brightly once upon being connected, this is normal. It also may flash dimly twice when Windows is starting. If it does not light up when you see the logon screen, then you did not correctly patch the DP's software. Those dim flashes indicate that the software tries to initialize the reader, but it won't recognize Microsoft's device. You need to overwrite files in the correct DP software's installation folder after deactivating dphost and dpagent. You need to have proper access rights to be able to overwrite files in DP's installation folder.
